We’ve never awarded a game a score of 100% in Play and… ha-ha, made you look… and no, we’ve not given 100% to this one either. But, if we were to review Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer separately and give it a percentage score, we’d honestly be tempted to give it the big ONE-ZERO-ZERO. We’ve been racking our brains for just one, tiny thing that might be wrong with it – just something that we’d add or change to make it better – and we have come up with absolutely nothing. We may have to drop a P-bomb. No no, not ‘piss’. And not ‘penis’ either. It’s a word that, for a game reviewer, can be even dirtier than those two put together. It’s not completely forbidden, but if you’re going to use it, you really have to be sure you mean it. That word is ‘perfect’.

Some will argue that it would be better if you could have 64-player deathmatches, or 4-player co-op, or if it ran in 1080p, or if it had some kind of game mode in it that they just made up because they actually think they know more about game design than Infinity Ward. But screw them. This review is Play’s opinion, and in Play’s opinion it is not possible on current technology for Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer to do what it does any better than it already does it. So we’re not going to try and rack our brains any more about that. There are other things about Modern Warfare 2 that require some serious brain-racking, and we’re sorry to say it’s not really a good kind of brain-racking. The sad fact is that we’ve been spending a lot of time wondering desperately what the hell happened to the single-player campaign. Prepare yourself for a wee bit of bad news.

The score is about right, Gav. The single player is a bit boring, if I’m totally honest. The missions with Soap and his crew are the best ones, but the American invasion missions are too repetitive and require too much backtracking, eg the Wolverines level. The multiplayer is an absolute HOOT, it’s brilliant. Spec-Ops, tried it 1 player and it was good, if a little hard. Playing it with a PSN friend will be superb, haven’t done that yet.

I’d give it 94 or 95%, if you get it for under £30, from Morrisons or Sainsburys, or via a trade-in deal at Game – COD4, and it’s half price I think, or £10 if you trade in Tekken 6 or Uncharted 2, can’t remember that shop.

Hope they support the game with more dlc than COD4. Apart from the single player being a bit short I really love the game. But I still believe Uncharted 2 was a more enjoyable experience, just wish there were more people playin U2 multiplayer.
