Skype On Vita: The Start Of Something Brilliant

"HI BETH DAVIES HOW ARE YOU"

PS Vita is not a phone. According to some publications in the run up to its release, this would be a massive hindrance to the device designed as a portable games machine.

We laughed in the general direction of these claims, as games machines aren’t phones, silly. PS Vita doesn’t need to be a phone to compete, because it’s not made to compete with the likes of iPhones and Android devices – it is its own thing, away from the needs of… sorry, what’s that?

Ah.

Seems PS Vita now has Skype. So it’s basically been turned into a phone. We always said Vita needed that sort of functionality, so it can compete on an even playing field with the likes of iPhones and Android devices.

Here’s the announcement video, starring ‘he used to be really good at Quake, I think’ Fatal1ty:

Alright, so putting aside the arguments about Vita having or not having phone functionality, it’s safe to say this is a good thing. In fact, from what we’ve seen, it could well be a genuinely great feature.

The usual Skype free video calls is one thing, but the ability to have it running – and be able to use it – while playing a game ratchets it up a notch from ‘mildly useful distraction’ to ‘something you might damn well use quite a bit’. Usefulness is nothing without ease of use, and it actually looks like both of those boxes have been ticked.

It might chew through the battery like a total git though, so there is that consideration. But generally speaking, it’s good to see Vita being turned into a phone.
