Has Vita Been Successful?

PS Vita has not yet been a success. Granted, it’s only been out two-and-a-half months in Europe and the US, but that doesn’t stop it from being a statement laced in hard-hitting journalistic truth (backed up by zero statistics, at least right now).

Does that mean it won’t be a success? Of course not. In fact, with each passing day we’re seeing more and more infrastructure coming to the system, we get a lowering price that brings it to genuine impulse buy territory, we’re closer to other actual games coming out for the machine. Things aren’t as spectacularly explosively impressive as people apparently want them to be, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t good.

But it’s not a success story yet. So far it’s a machine a few people have bought and said ‘oh, that’s actually quite impressive’ before either putting it down for a couple of months or playing something like FIFA or Everybody’s Golf obsessively.

There’s nothing wrong with that, by the bye, it would just be nice to have reasons beyond launch games, Mortal Kombat and Disgaea 3 to play the bloody thing.

Anyway, stop digressing.

Basically, PS Vita isn’t failing but it isn’t succeeding. However, as a result of its lack of clearly-defined success – be it from four-and-a-half or two-and-a-half months on the shelves – we could well be on the verge of an upswing in fortunes.

Soon enough we’ll get the second wave of releases hitting. Prices have lowered and will probably go down a bit more before stabilising at something pretty reasonable. The buzz about the machine will re-beginagain. And it will become successful. Conjecture? Yes. Fact? Dunno. Opinion? Certainly.

Or we’ll just get Monster Hunter Vita and it’ll turn into the most successful handheld ever made.

    Despite reading the article I’m not really interested in the PSvita. I know little about it, but it seems to lie somewhere between a proper gaming console and phone games. My point being if I’m at home I’ll play the ps3, if I’m riding the bus/train I’ll whip out my phone for 10 minutes (games, messages etc). I wouldn’t bother buying something that appears to lack options in both enviroments. That’s my uninformed opinion and possibly why it’s not setting the market on fire.

    I love the damn thing, I don’t think there’s been a day since launch I haven’t played mine. I guess partly my excitement was driven up by constantly demoing it and showing it off for customers before it came out, but still. I like how strong the launch line-up was and Unit 13 and Mortal Kombat have been solid additions. Sadly we’re at the annoying stage where a lot of people don’t appreciate how many games came out at launch and are all “where’s the next one?” That’ll be interesting, to see what is next and how frequently good games are going to come. For now, I’m happy with Wipeout, Everybody’s Golf and MLB The Show (despite the region-locked online pass bullshit).

    My only gripe so far is the pricing of the downloadable titles. Had there been 32gb cards at launch and had the downloadable titles been significantly cheaper than retail copies, I’d have jumped all over it – nothing like the convenience of having all your games in one spot without having to carry them in a pouch or switch carts. I thought the whole point of digital distribution was to cut down on shipping and packaging costs to make stuff cheaper?
