PS4: Sony patents virtual reality tech

Sony has filed a new patent that gives more clues of its research into virtual reality gaming. The documents speak of a device to help players avoid walking into things when they are wearing a full headset, obscuring their vision of the surrounding area.

It follows patents from Sony earlier in the year for a head-mounted display unit and an accompanying audio system.

The documents detail a “camera or distance sensor” that can calculate the distance between the player and foreign objects within the area. If an object is too close, the technology will replicate it in the virtual game world, altering the player to its presence.

It all sounds pretty sci-fi, and for now it is, but it’s good to see Sony planning ahead. Take a look at the full patent HERE.
