FFXIV: PS4 beta open to all, starts 22 February

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is coming to PS4 in April but gamers can look forward to getting a sneak peek at the revamped MMO even sooner – the beta is scheduled to begin on 22 February worldwide, will be open to all PS4 owners and you won’t even need PS Plus membership in order to participate.

This first phase of the beta will work exactly like the closed beta did on PS3 last year – it’ll be a chance to get to grips with the new version of the MMO but without any lasting impact on the world, since player data will be erased at the end of this phase. A second phase is planned for early April, shortly before the game’s release and player data will carry over from that phase to the full release later that month. It’ll be a free download from the PlayStation Store from 22 February but a word of warning – you’ll need a bunch of free hard drive space (even the PS3 version is huge) and a speedy connection if you even want to have the client downloaded (let alone updated) before the beta ends.

We got a chance to go hands-on with the PS4 version last week, and it’s a noticable step up from the PS3 version. Now running at 1080p and 60fps for the most part (we spotted a few drops when things got a bit hectic), it’s a really pretty game. Purists will be able to plug in a mouse and keyboard for a more traditional MMO experience, while those that just love pushing technology will be pleased to hear that Remote Play is enabled and optimised for the entire game. In practice, the screen is too small and the network environment not ideal to be running dungeons or anything. But for catching up with marketboard sales (if you can read the text on the smaller screen), daily quests or gathering/crafting, it’ll be ideal.

Still, you’ll be able to check it out for yourselves in a few weeks. But in the meantime, here’s the new trailer for the PS4 version, bursting with new ways to play and even prettier things to kill for thousands of hours. And with nearly two million active subscribers, you won’t find yourself wanting for company, either. Enjoy!
