XCOM Carefully Raises A Middle Finger To The Internet

xcom enemy unknown firaxis strategy remake

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist. The greatest trick 2K Games ever pulled, on the other hand, was convincing the world something they all hoped would exist didn’t exist. The sort of misdirection that makes you put all of your hope-shaped eggs in a single XCOM-shaped FPS-flavoured basket. The sort of convincing that then slaps you in the face with an XCOMmy strategy game developed by one of the finest developers of strategy games in the world.

That’s right, kids – 2K just bitch-slapped the entire, whining internet.

Ever since its announcement, 2K Marin’s FPS remake of the cult classic turn-based strategy game has been met with howls of derision wherever it dares show its face. “HOW DARE THEY?” they cry, “I AM SO FURIOUS MY LEGS FELL OFF,” they add, probably while crying into a freshly-made Pot Noodle*.

2K Marin weathered this storm – it kept on keeping on, beavering away at XCOM, making changes to add more strategy to the experience but generally keeping things going the way the studio wanted them to go. i.e. ‘Not a remake of the original’.

i.e. ‘Something internet commenters could never get their heads around’.

But now it seems Firaxis and 2K have pulled the rug out from under all of us. Who in their right mind can have legitimate complaints about this announcement? Sure, there’s no Julian Gollop involved, at least as far as we know, and we don’t actually know anything about how good or bad the game will actually be.

But as an announcement – in the context of the whole original remake’s announcement and subsequent reaction to that – it’s up there with the best. It’s 2K raising a middle finger to all of the internet’s more frothy-mouthed denizens and it’s asking, in a manner not too dissimilar to Chris Morris: “Happy now?”

I, for one, am. Now we just have to see if the game itself ends up being a pile of crap or not.

*Other noodle-based snacks are available.
