Sony: No PS4 Discussion ‘For Quite Some Time’

Sony: No PS4 Discussion ‘For Quite Some Time’

There’s been talk bubbling up recently on when this current generation of consoles is going to end. It’s been something that’s been targeted more at Nintendo (Wii-U) and Xbox 360 (weak games schedule ahead) rather than Sony, but even so, there has been talk. Gossip. Hearsay.

Forbes has just published an interview with Sony PlayStation chief Jack Tretton and he’s pushed on the subject of PlayStation4. His answer?

PlayStation3 is really just hitting its stride. And technologically, I don’t think it’s possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have. What we’ve seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3. We invested heavily in that, we rolled a very heavy rock up a steep hill, through the launch period. But now I think that all pays off, and we’ve got a long run way behind it. So, I wouldn’t look for any discussion of a next generation PlayStation for quite some time.

I think there’s ground to be carved out for everybody. But I didn’t see anything about Nintendo’s announcement that said ‘Oh, we’d better get working on rolling out a new PlayStation here pretty soon.’

So there you have it. The official answer, from Sony themselves, is that PlayStation4 is still quite a way off. You can start your guesswork at how many years from now it’s going to be before an announcement is made but the point is that your PlayStation3 will be valid for a long long time to come.

(Slightly ironic that I end the last sentence like that as I’m playing Duke Nukem Forever. Sigh.)

Don’t know about you but I’m happy there’s no PS4 on the cards.
I think neither Sony, nor I could afford one for a time to come.

Same here. Glad PS3 has got plenty of life left.

Only got my ps3 at the beginning of the year and I don’t think anyone needs a ps4 at the moment seeing as I know loads of people who want a ps3 including my friend who I converted(xbox)
