Resident Evil 6: Mixed Reviews Make For An Interesting Discussion

Pause for thought (for the day), yesterday.

Resident Evil 6 reviews have been mixed so far, it’s fair to say. We enjoyed it a lot, giving the huge game a fantastic 88% and saying things about it being ‘well good and stuff’ (not a direct quote).

Elsewhere you see the likes of our sister mag GamesTM throwing Resi 6 a seven out of 10, Gamespot showering the game in non-praise with a four-point-five out of 10 and Eurogamer landing dead centre between pretty much every other review in the world with a six out of 10.

What does it all mean? It means a mixed reception. And what does that mean? It means a game that’s actually interesting enough to get different reactions from the public and press. Regardless of whether the game is actually great, terrible or middling, I can’t help but see this as a good thing.

Universal praise is boring, and universal hatred is tiring. Universal ambivalence is worthless, and universal ignorance is almost as bad. Universal all-over-the-place-ness? That’s where my interest is piqued.

It means not only does the game do things right – every single review, no matter how low the score, lists some glowing positives about Resident Evil 6 – but it isn’t consistent. It isn’t just one long wall of pleasure. There are dips, as we highlighted in our own review, and that’s where it gets interesting.

That’s where discussion comes from. That’s where personal opinions come into play. That’s where we all retreat to Twitter and start furiously opining in the general direction of everyone else (or not furiously, if you aren’t the furious type).

And that’s where it gets interesting. Good or bad, one thing’s for certain about Resident Evil 6: it’s going to be an interesting talking point for a while to come.

  • I’ve read all the reviews mentioned and my biggest takeaway is that I need to judge it for myself. I’ve always enjoyed RE games, even if RE5 completely forsook horror and atmosphere for action and explosions (for tentacles).

Do I miss cringing, thinking of what new horror is around the corner? Yes, but I’ve got Dead Space for that. Did I have fun with RE5 despite it’s lack of scares? Absolutely.

So, I’ll be playing RE6 this week.

It’s interesting: I don’t think the reviews have put off a single person I’ve spoken to about it. Shows how little relevance they have when compared to brand loyalty and the need for people to find out for themselves.

We no longer live in the review-focused hegemony: people are empowered by the internet, and it’s showing in how they behave. The critics matter less – at least in the old fashioned manner of throwing numbers at people to tell them whether or not to buy something – and it’s more about making your mind up for yourself.

Which is fantastic, as far as I’m concerned. And I’m one of the critics. There’ll always be a place for reviews, but their place as all-important is pretty much redundant.

    Anyway, I digress.

Well the minute i saw the game-play trailers, I knew I wasn’t going to buy this. I HATE what capcom has done to RE6 and i didn’t even look at RE5. Many areas of the the gaming world say RE4 was a good game, personally i thought it was ok. I will always agree RE needed to be errmm “reinvented” with new-and better) horror games they had to change it.
*chuckles* whenever i think about buying RE6 i just feel dirty, i just can not bring myself to play a game that’s having a identity crisis, what is it? an action game or horror? i just dont know and neither do capcom.

“whenever i think about buying RE6 i just feel dirty, i just can not bring myself to play a game that’s having a identity crisis, what is it? an action game or horror?”
seriously?? i dont mean to sound troll-like, but its a freaking game! just buy it. enjoy it. or dont. theres no need for philosophy or any of that useless crap in the gaming world.
