Okami HD Continues Tradition Of Actual Good HD Re-releases

Amaterasu, yesterday.

It seems the race to the bottom when it comes to these endless HD re-releases popping up on PSN and in shops has done its absolute best to… well, not begin. In fact, now Okami HD has been announced for release this year on PS3, it’s safe to say publishers are mainly picking their HD re-releases based on actual quality.

What a bizarre world this is we live in, where commercially unsuccessful games are given a second chance because they were so warmly received by the critics and the few who actually bothered to take a risk and buy them.

Okay, so that thinking only applies to Okami HD and Ico/Shadow Of The Colossus HD, as the likes of God Of War, Metal Gear Solid and Ratchet And Clank were big-sellers the first time around.

But it’s keeping things on track – we haven’t had a genuinely bad HD re-release yet. While the Splinter Cell Trilogy was a bit of a shonky hack-job, it was decent enough, and while the HD sheen on the Prince Of Persia Trilogy wasn’t as shiny as the shiniest of shinies, the quality of the games shined (“shone”) through.

And now Okami HD. This is a brave new world of interesting releases, where publishers no longer have to fear spunking millions of dollars up the wall on an abject failure, as it won’t cost them much at all to rejig a game or three, whack ‘HD’ on the end of its title and release it in a shop devoid of bricks and mortar.

It doesn’t encourage them to take risks in making new titles, sure, but there’s enough from the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era deserving of a lick of paint and another chance to keep us interested for quite a while.

Just so long as it doesn’t turn into yet another one of the industry’s flogged horses/cash cows/metaphorical farm animals. I don’t think an HD re-release of FIFA 2002 would be advisable, for example.

Resident Evil’s Gamecube remake? Sure. Bujingai? Yeah. The first two Yakuza games? Of course. Viewtiful Joe? Damn straight. There’s a lot to choose from, and so far it looks like the right choices are being made. Keep it up, publishers of the world.

But you did say ‘Okay, so that thinking only applies to Okami HD and Ico/Shadow Of The Colossus HD’. Which based on the words in your article isn’t 100% true.

Alright then, maybe I did forget it. I shall immediately kill myself.
