Metal Gear Online Is Dead. Long Live Metal Gear Online

Metal Gear Online shut down today. Don’t pretend you miss it; you probably never played it. And you probably never played it because getting it to work was harder than getting a loan for a million pounds.

Seriously, it might have been the most user-unfriendly sign-up process WE’VE EVER SEEN on a current gen console. As well as the usual sign up processes you’ve already gone through, you then had to sign up to terms with Konami via form so detailed you needed a lawyer present at all times.

Then it took about two years to download the thing.

And then you played it and thought: you know what? With a bit of tweaking, this could be really, really good. In a lot of ways, it already was.

The pace of the thing being a good example. Nice and considered, without the usual run-n-gun-n-run mentality (well, in the early days at least). Loads of different modes, including one where you ‘be’ Snake.

There were some cool ideas in there, but not enough for us to mourn its passing. A sequel, however, would excite us immensely. Especially if it was directly linked to any upcoming MGS 5, where your multiplayer exploits figured into the campaign: territory won and lost, supply lines established, weapons discovered. Like a super-evolved version of Peace Walker.

So, Konami, forget about all the forms and that guff. Do what we just said and we’ll forgive you. Maybe.
