Mass Effect 3 – Ending & Multiplayer DLC Details Leak

Remember the anger over Mass Effect 3’s ending? Oooh that feels like centuries ago now. The Extended Cut DLC will fix the ending and Reddit has grabbed the official descriptio, which has leaked ahead of release:

An expanded ending for Mass Effect 3. Additional scenes and an extended epilogue reveal the impact of Shepard’s choices on the future of the galaxy.

That tells us precisely nothing. However, the fact that it’s an official DLC description that’s leaked means it’s not too much longer before w’ll get this DLC, and it’s also worth noting that the voice actors for EDI, Admiral Hackett and Kaiden Alenko (dead in my game, whoops) have tweeted that they’re recording new dialogue for the Extended Cut DLC.

The release date is officially summer, which is pretty much now.

There’s also more multiplayer DLC on the way. Mass Effect 3: Earth will add more weapons, classes and maps. The leaked description is below:

The fighting is fiercest when it’s your home at stake! Mass Effect 3™: Earth adds mods, gear, and new maps for Rio, Vancouver, and London. It features 3 new weapons: Piranha assault shotgun, Acolyte pistol, and Typhoon light machine gun. Six new human N7 classes are also available: Destroyer, Paladin, Demolisher, Slayer, Shadow, and Fury!

We’re interested to see what the new classes are – we presume Paladins won’t charge into battle with just a halberd (go on BioWare, we dare you) – but no release date was given for the Earth DLC either.

So plenty of more Mass Effect 3 on the way. The question is whether those who hated the ending really want this new ending DLC. Most of us have moved on, right? I know I have…

There’s been a lot of talk on the BSN forums about Comic Con (July 12-15) so they’re likely going to do the full announcement about the Extended DLC and show some footage then.

I have really mixed feelings about the Extended Cut DLC. Part of me hopes that something credible can be salvaged from the wreckage, but a more dominant part of me justs wants to never play Mass Effect ever again and move on to a game series not published by EA.

It’s obviously not a good sign that this is an extended ending, rather than an alternate one. The Mass Effect 3 ending was a delicate blend of plotholes, contrivances, terrible characterisation, soul-crushing disappointment, and a generous helping of everto ex machina. True, one of its problems *was* that colossal and nonsensical plot twists were presented to the player as matter-of-factly and with as much detail as a PSA about what the different colours on a traffic light mean, but that’s only the tip of the ME3 ending’s iceburg of suckiness.

Really, you can spend as long as you like explaining the ending and detailing the consequences of Shepard’s arbitrary decision, but chances are the only difference it’ll make is that players will be able to decide that they hate it straight away instead of spending hours in a state of bewildered confusion and *then* deciding that they hate it. And for all those fans who have already suffered the non-extended ending, it’ll only re-open the wound.

But hey, on the bright side, it’s going to be free! Hooray?
