What Developers Wish They Never Said

No-one wants to say their game is rubbish. Developers spend ages toiling away at a project for years, suffer the horrible reality at some point that it might not quite match the idea they had in their heads, then hope by saying nice things about it that they can convince the gaming public that it’ll be awesome. Fair enough – they’re doing what they have to in order to promote their game.

Even so, we can’t help but wince at some of these quotes, which have appeared in exclusive interviews with Play over the years. The Bionic Commando quote is particularly prophetic…

Sonic The Hedgehog
“I feel that these days, people have difficulty feeling joy or excitement in their daily lives. One of my plans is to let people feel that excitement and joy through this game” – Shun Nakamura, Project Director

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe
“You can’t be the best beat-‘em-up of all time unless you take on Street Fighter – I think we have a really good chance. Hopefully gamers will see something in our game they don’t see in their game, and Street Fighter fans will see something in ours that they don’t see in theirs” – Hector Sanchez, Associate Producer

Alone In The Dark
“I really respect what they’ve done in Resi 4 but having a rocket launcher fire at a boss then leave not even a scratch, this is something I don’t want… so there will be a lot of [environmental combat] elements and we think this is better than shooting everything” – David Nadal, Game Director

Bionic Commando
“We want to make players open their minds because we believe that the new-gen isn’t just about better graphics. But the gaming has to step up and go into a new direction. If we don’t do that, we’ll go out of business.” – Ulf Andersson, GRIN

Dynasty Warriors 6
“A big feature we’ve included is the Renbu system; it’s a system based on the player’s skill and it enables you to chain your combo to an infinite level. To try to get over the criticism of repetitive button mashing, we integrated this new system into Dynasty Warriors 6” – Kenichi Masumoto, Product Manager

These quotes have been pulled from a feature in Issue 202 of Play, which also catches developers bigging up the likes of PlayStation Home, Star Wars: Force Unleashed II, Dead or Alive Paradise, Army of Two: The 40th Day, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, Lair, Call of Duty: World at War, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Haze and Aliens vs Predator. So check it out. It’s preeeetty embarrassing…

I’m sure he’d have been in, but we didn’t really cover anything like Daikatana in Play.

He can have an honourary mention here, though.

I’m surprised you don’t have any Bethesda quotes from the lead-up to Oblivion. When I think of falling for hype before a game, then it deflating after release and crushing my poor soul, I think of Oblivion.
