Stan Lee: “Games are miracles”

In an interview with The Guardian, comic book legend Stan Lee has revealed that if he were starting out today he would be looking to get into the games industry, not comics. On the eve of the release of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, the man credited with the co-creation of such characters as Spider-Man, The Hulk, the X-Men, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four and Thor, expressed his wonder at the artistry of games design and his utter bewilderment as to how games get made.

“If I were young now and I wanted to do stories, I would very much want to get into the videogame business because it’s the most exciting,” Lee revealed. “Videogames and movies are the most exciting forms of entertainment. But a videogame in a way is more imaginative, it has more variety. In a movie you stick to the plotline, in a videogame you go in a million different directions. I have no idea how they’re able to do that. It’s like a miracle.”

Lee also expressed his pleasure at Marvel finally making movies of its own works. “Nobody knows our characters or what makes them popular as well as Marvel,” he insisted. “Now that they have complete control of the movies, it’s certain that each production will be as true to the characters as possible.” Given that Marvel was recently bought out by Disney, and given the Mouse House’s endeavours to break into game publishing in a big way, it seems likely that a Marvel will see closer ties with game development in the future too.
