Sony still selling PS3s at a loss

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Sony’s chief financial officer, Nobuyuki Oneda, has revealed that Sony is still making a loss on every PS3 unit sold, albeit less of a loss now than when the console launched in 2006. Sony is currently believed to be losing about 6 cents in every dollar on PS3s (about $18 per unit sold), as opposed to the 13 cents per dollar it was losing initially. We should point out that its normal that console sales are not normally profitable in themselves and that the bulk of revenue comes from the licensing of software in this kind of business model (i.e. Sony makes money from every PlayStation game sold), but that’s still a chunk of money disappearing down the tubes. The Sony empire as a whole did manage to turn a profit for the last quarter though, so it’s not time to have a whip-round just yet.
