Sony Explored Many Technologies Before Move

Sony has explained at GDC that it tried out a number of different technologies and methods in pursuing a motion control solution for the PlayStation 3. Move was originally revealed at E3 last year, but given its final name and extensive demos at the developer event in San Francisco this week.

“We looked at many different technologies before we settled with the vision-based combination with inertial sensors,” SCE WorldWide Studio boss Shuhei Yoshida explained. “We looked at pros and cons, we created prototype games using some other technical systems.”

Yoshida is also pleased that Move will come out in time for Christmas and seems to think it will have a similar impact on sales of the PS3 as the price-drop and Slim models did in 2009. “We’re excited to have this system [Move] this year,” he said. “Last Christmas, we felt like we were able to shift to the right price point for PS3, and we feel we’re ready to target a broader audience, and this is perfect timing.”
