Sony boss gets teary eyed over Blu-ray

The fanboys would have it that the world of consumer electronics is all about passion, loyalty, love and hate. The industry press and the financial analysts, at the other end of the spectrum would have it that it’s just about cold, calculated business decisions, and nothing more. The truth, it seems, is somewhere in the middle.
Speaking to Business Week at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, Sony president Sir Howard Stringer told of the emotion he felt when he persuaded Disney to back Blu-ray, when the HD disc format was still just a little Blu twinkle in his eye,
“I remember having a conversation with Bob [Iger, Disney president] and saying: ‘It’s going to cost us a lot of money to deliver Blu-ray.’ And Bob said: ‘I believe in it because I believe in superior technology, and I’m behind you 100%. You don’t have to worry about me.’ I almost choked up on that one.”
Yes, behind that happy-go-lucky exterior lies a deep wellspring of emotion.
