Skate 3 Announced

In a move that has caught us a little off guard to be honest, EA has just announced Skate 3. This follow up to what has become the generation’s premier skating franchise is once again being developed by Black Box and is planned for release May 2010. That seem like a pretty quick turnaround given that the last game was only released in January this year, but the 16 months between Skate 2 and Skate 3 is actually longer than was taken between the first game and its sequel.

But what you really want to know about Skate 3 is the features and there looks to be plenty. The headline grabbers are co-op play throughout the story mode with the creation of your own team for competitive online play. “The social and community aspects of the SKATE franchise are something we’ve always embraced, but we’ve never done anything to the scale you’re going to see in SKATE 3,” Jason DeLong, Skate 3 producer, said in a press release. “We’re giving gamers a very unique experience by providing them with the tools they need to build their ultimate team or to create a team comprised entirely of their online friends. From there, it’s all about proving yourself – teaming up, and throwing down.”

What this means is that you can complete challenges with your friends rather than alone. The game’s creation tools, dubbed skate.Create, are also getting an overhaul according to Black Box with even more graphic and skate park creation tools being made available. In terms of new tricks, an early demo trailer shows a couple of new abilities for certain such as Slides (like a Grind, but using the deck instead of the trucks to slide down a surface, standing on the bottom of the deck with wheels facing up). You also seem to be able to do some kick-flip cancelling in mid air to change tricks. Just as important to fans will be the change of location from San Vanelona to a place called Port Calverton where a whole host of new spots and challenges can be found.

It still seems a little early to be trying a sequel to us, but with some more new features we could well be sold on it. EA is hoping to sweeten the deal with some preorder bonus material too, so keep an eye out for that.
