Scott Pilgrim Vs The Game

Indie comic book hero and soon to be Hollywood movie star Scott Pilgrim is going to be adapted into a videogame thanks to Ubisoft an announcement at Comic Con has revealed. The comic book series created by Bryan Lee O’Malley is being made into a movie by Spaced, Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright (which is awesome) and has been picked up by Ubisoft in a deal with the movie’s studio Universal (maybe not so awesome, read on).

There’s no word yet on format, but given the nature of the comic we would expect it to come to PS3 and Xbox 360. For those of you that don’t know, Scott Pilgrim is a 24-year old “slacker” bass player living in Toronto, playing in his band Sex Bob-Omb who starts off the comics dating a 17-year old called Knives Chau. However he then meets an American girl named Romana Flowers (she’s rollerblading through his mind as a shortcut to make her delivery) and his world goes a little (more) bananas. By now you should be catching on to a vaguely game influenced, sci-fi and fantasy theme going on, but it gets better. In order to keep dating Romana, Scott must defeat her seven evil exes in combat, many of whom have super powers of some kind, but thankfully Scott’s a dab hand pugilist too.

The comic is full of geek, gaming and pop cultural references as well as incredibly witty and insightful dialogue. You may have guessed by now I’m a bit of a fan, although Ubisoft picking up this license doesn’t fill me with immediate joy. The Lost game and the subsequent canning of the Heroes game have shown Ubisoft doesn’t necessarily stick out the course on licensed titles and I’d really like to see what someone could do with a Scott Pilgrim game. For his part Bryan O’Malley had the following to say, which made me feel much better.

You probably won’t hear much about this game for the next few months. The game is still in the very early stages (we only officially “did the deal” in the past few weeks and it’s maybe 3-4 weeks into development right now). It’s going to be very cool and I’ll be very involved. And there will be other exciting announcements as development rolls on.

The most important thing is that it’s being made by huge fans of the books and it’s a passion project for a lot of people (including me, obviously)! So just sit back and wait and every time they announce some information you’ll be like “OH MY GOD WOO”
