Ratchet & Clank: an overrated franchise

The Metacritic averages tell a warm story about the Ratchet & Clank series. Let’s see… the first one averages at 88, the second at 90, the third at 91, the fourth at 81 and Tools Of Destruction, last year’s PS3 title, is at 89. Great. The critics clearly appreciate it.
Why, though?

Ratchet & Clank is dumbed down, basic platforming that hardly dabbles with ambition. You collect bolts, shoot enemies using the largely weak controls and perform basic platforming actions that, in all honesty, Rayman 2 had already mastered on the PSone. Even when the PS2 games were being released, it felt outdated. Naughty Dog’s Jak & Daxter series may have disintegrated with each passing instalment, but the first two were inordinately better than any of the four Ratchet & Clank titles.

While I believe that it’s much more worthwhile to play a platform masterpiece like Super Mario Galaxy, on the Wii, everyone else seems to disagree. Anyone care to tell me why Ratchet is so good?
