PS3 Leaps Above Mac As iPlayer Source

It would seem the the prominence of the BBC iPlayer link brought about by the PS3 firmware update has been a success because more people are now watching programs through the iPlayer on Sony’s console than on Macs. In the first week of the firmware 3.0 update Sony enjoyed 10 per cent of the iPlayer audience while Apple Macs attracted 8.5 per cent. Presumably the majority of the rest watched iPlayer using home PCs or handheld devices.

While clearly an interesting boost for Sony and good news for the BBC in terms of forging a new and successful partnership, the Beeb has remained cautious. “We’ll have to wait and see whether this holds up in the coming weeks, but this enthusiastic reception makes it clear that users do want iPlayer on their TV,” BBC’s Anthony Rose said. However, he has also described the picture quality as “almost as good as broadcast television,” and noted that these figures show a genuine demand for on-demand TV experiences in the living room.

Hopefully this will be the start of some major developments in on-demand TV.

I think it should be a HD iplayer.

That would do a lot for the picture quality.
