PlayStation Games You’ve Never Played: Slap Happy Rhythm Busters

That’s slap happy before you try and second-guess what this is about, not happy slapping. And second guessing a game called Slap Happy Rhythm Busters? Really?

So we’ll take the guesswork out of it. It’s a 2D fighting game that done by a team that looks like it went to the same art school as the Jet Set Radio mob. The characters include a large snowman (Frosty), a girl sitting on the shoulders of her friend (Vivian & Roxy), a weird blob with a chainsaw and cleaver (Holeman) and Chun-Li (Mia).

So that’s the Slap Happy bit explained. What about the Rhythm Busters bit? This was supposedly going to have heavy rhythm action elements alongside the brawling, which would have made it unique, but these got watered down throughout development until it was relegated to a mechanic for some of the supers. Without that element playing a huge part, Slap Happy Rhythm Busters ended up a shallow if stylish fighting game and one that’s been almost forgotten as gaming has marched onward.

It’s an example of the kind of game that finds a home on PSN nowadays, as it would have sold maybe three copies over here as a full price release to the insanely curious (after all, how many people bought Arcana Heart 3?). Still, at least we’ve got Reality Fighters nowaday, eh?

…oh.
