Play’s Games Of Gamescom

We spent most of last week in Cologne seeing all the latest titles at Gamescom 2010. Very few disappointed and most impressed us greatly, but only a few took our breath away. Here’s our pick of the best games at the show.

5. Brink (Bethesda) – It’s been on the radar for a long time now, but Splash Damage’s new multiplayer shooter continues to look the business. That just goes to show how forward thinking it was the begin with. Its fluid gameplay, strong shooting and overall polish make it one to watch next year.

4. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Square Enix) – One mission played three times in three different ways. That was Eidos Montreal proving absolutely that the promise of choice in its new game was a lot more than just smoke and mirrors. Human Revolution is for real and it could blow your mind.

3. Journey (Sony) – Mysterious a gorgeous to look at, thatgamecompany’s follow up to Flower really shows its ambition. With complex themes of loneliness and vulnerability interwoven into a huge and enigmatic world, Journey is taking its developer’s commitment to emotional gaming to new places.

2.LittleBigPlanet 2 (Sony) – The latest revelation from Media Molecule is that its music creation tool has become something so much more. As well as creating and editing your own tunes it allows you to create sequences of events for spawning new areas of your level or just creating background events.

1. Gran Turismo 5 (Sony) – Beautiful, complex, intimidating and clearly a work of singular commitment to excellence, Yamauchi’s latest is clearly the definitive Gran Turismo experience, blowing every other racing sim out of the water with a single blow come this November.

And here’s the official Gamescom awards from Germany. As you can see, Sony dominated the field there too.
