Platinum Trophies: Do You Bother?

Platinum Trophies: Do You Bother?

I have a shocking truth to confess, and one that’s sure to destroy my prominent standing in the games industry. I know I am the most popular writer in the world and am, in fact, King Of All Games, but… sigh… I don’t have a single platinum trophy.

But this is all set to change, thanks to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I currently sit on 91% of trophies earned and, once five more shouts are found and four more dragons bitch-slapped, will have 100%. And with that comes a platinum. My first. My only.

Am I in a minority here? I’m still of a decidedly old-fashioned viewpoint on the whole trophies/achievements thing in that I see them as pretty much wholly unnecessary and the sorts of things that are often implemented in the most pointless, lazy way imaginable.

Sometimes they do, don’t get me wrong – but often trophies add nothing more than a compulsion to do something you wouldn’t normally do in order to get some plinking noise and a fleeting sense you’ve achieved something. Like playing through one of the worst games ever made on hard just so you have more invisible willy-waving props at your disposal.

As such, I’ve never gone out of my way to earn a platinum. On (*spit*) Xbox 360 I 1000-pointed Oblivion (notice a pattern here?), but other than that, nothing on Microsoft’s console – not even on Fallout 3. Though I got quite close.

I see no compulsion, I have no real drive to get everything in most games. There are exceptions, as I’ve mentioned, but the general rule stands: I do not care about platinum trophies. Am I alone?

It doesn’t stop me from being proud that I’m about to earn my first though, which is quite annoying.

I really couldn’t give a flying fig about trophies in general. I play games to have fun, to escape from the day to day hell that is my working life. The thought of having to have a certain number of kills, or find every object just ruins it. Just play, have fun, enjoy. If I see someone with loads of trophies, I don’t think ‘Wow, aren’t you amazing. I want to be you’, I think ‘You poor sod – all those hours wasted, and for what ?’

    Just my two cents anyway.

I am a proud Trophie Whore.
I love the fact that even after the game has finished there is still a reason to play.
I understand its not for everyone but I love the little buggers.
I could be wrong but I find that as I love RPG’s , collecting loot, levelling up etc the whole trophie thing just appeals to me.

  • I really like trophy i do think they are a good idea, Okay some are pointless but others are really good, like on COD waw and Black ops the zombie trophys are fun to try and get, not too fused for platinum as some game are soo hard to actually get them, May try it for dark souls but again taking some time trying to do the game it self nevermind going out of the way to do a couple

  • of trophys, Generally yes i like them but the game and the style of trophy has to be worth it, PSN games are good for trophys as they are only short games at least gives you a reason to go back on it, more value for your money i guess

I don’t have any platinum trophies. I play for the fun of it. I don’t get the whole winning a trophy for knowing how to turn on my ps3. Some trophies are fun to get but i find the rest of it just gets obsessive and annoying and ruins the experience.

I have 4 platinum trophies!! WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2010, 2011 & WWE 12. Also WWE legends of Wrestlemania. I’m a big WWE fan as you can tell, & it’s not that difficult to get them. Once I’ve got the platinum Im finished with the game. I don’t like games without trophies anymore.

I love trophies & have 22 platinums, a total of 2895 all together, including the hardest platinum in the history of hard platinums call of duty world at war. If I enjoy a game I 100% it. This is something I have done since the mega drive days & will do forever some games need the 100% treatment as they are just that good. Trophies are a great way to keep track of progress & let’s not forget uplay linked trophies from ubisoft that actually earn you dlc for their games. Me and a friend often do a race to platinum when we buy same game on the same day just for fun & bragging rights.

I couldn’t have put it any better. Sorry If my friend told me he had 22 platinum and 2895 trophies i’d tell him he needs to get a life and not to mention that fact to any woman that maybe attracted to him, because that fact would put off any normal woman. That just sounds like you sit around play games, over wieght and don’t have a job. its NOT impressive and its NOT clever.

Don’t bother me what any woman but my wife thinks, I personally think an obnoxious nob head like you should spend a bit of time looking in the mirror before trying to run your mouth. Simple fact is is rather sit down and play a game I enjoy instead of going out getting pissed and finding a cock end like you to smash 7 shades of shit out of like I used to do every weekend.

Ok DO’G so your not a fan of trophies but you are obviously a keen gamer as you are posting on here!
Some would say that the mere fact you play games makes you a sad wanna be 15 years old but I doubt thats the case.
Everyone is entitled there opinion but there is no need to slag off other people just because they find something interesting that you don’t !
All gamers should stick together regardless of opinions as we all share a common interest

I just recently got my first platinum for Uncharted Drakes Fortune, as I really enjoyed that particular game. I’m not gonna spend hours playing a crap game just because it’s got an easy platinum, dont see the point when you could be spending that time on a great game. Currently working on Assassin’s Creed II.
I only buy preowned games due to the price so I’m playing the good oldies first.

To date I have two platinum trophies: Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain. With Heavy Rain I got the platinum because most of the trophies just involve replaying chapters and getting a different outcome, which is something I wanted to do anyway. (And it was also really easy.) With Uncharted I was tempted by that Marco Polo skin you get for Platinum-ing the game. I don’t think I’ve ever put in any extra effort to get trophies for the sake of getting trophies. It just isn’t fun, and if it is fun, I don’t need trophies to motivate me, do I?

Trophies can be annoying as well. If it weren’t for trophies in LittleBigPlanet, then there wouldn’t be so many levels that are just blank but with infinite score bubbles in them, nobody would publish an entirely empty level called “Unnamed Level”, and the seemingly endless stream of “PLS PLAY + <3 MY LVL + ILL <3 URS" type mesages/levels wouldn't be nearly as endemic.

I never try to get Platnum trophies, there is no incentive too so why bother?

My proudest moments are my demon’s souls and dark souls platinums. You think you’re harder than me giant Smough? Well I platinumed your ass. (but I know you’re harder than me giant Ornstein, please don’t hurt me again)

I love going for platinum trophies in games I enjoy. I have platinum trophies in Assassins Creed 2, Mafia 2, Borderlands, and Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Currently I am trying to platinum Medal of Honor, Modern warfare 2, and Red Dead Redemption. I think it is stupid though when people spend hours playing games like Hannah Montana or Up just for a platinum trophy its just stupid. If you are going to platinum a game it should be something respectful.
