Phat PS3s Imploding, Sony Is On The Case

For unknown, but widely speculated reasons a number of PS3 owners (seemingly only those who bought ‘phat’ PS3s before the launch of the PS3 Slim last year) are experiencing PSN shut out issues that have gone on to lock them out of games offline as well. The fault causing this lockout situation remains unclear, but the Internet is ablaze with speculation that it has something to do with a calendar bug on older PS3 units.

“We’re aware that many of you are having difficulty connecting to the PlayStation Network this evening,” social media manager Jeff Rubenstein said on the official PS Blog. “Those of you with “slim” PS3s (the 120/250 GB models) appear to be unaffected. Know that we have narrowed down the issue and have engineers working to restore service even as you read this. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, and genuinely appreciate your patience while we work to resolve this”

Games such as Heavy Rain are having their trophies corrupted causing the game to lock players out even if you disconnect from the Internet. This has to go down as the worst PS3 outage to date, but hopefully Sony can get the problem fixed as soon as possible. It’s even affecting our office debug consoles.

We’ll update you as any further news comes through about this. We recommend tracking progress on the official Blogs for the US and Europe. The Sony PlayStation Twitter also has running updates

It’s very annoying but hopefully it’ll be fixed today or tomorrow. Just don’t play a game that has Trophies and you should be fine.

Unfortunately I didn’t hear about the trophy problem until after i played a game and have now lost the trophies off my system. I’ve also noticed that my PS3 clock reset itself to 23:53 31/12/00. I’ve since set it manually, but whenever I turn the console off it goes back to whatever time I set it to. This means that PlayTV won’t run timed recordings. A small blessing is that if you rest the clock and leave your PS3 on PlayTV can manage, just double check that changing the time hasn’t caused error messages in schedule before leaving it be.
