Metal Gear Rising Revengeance: Worst Name Ever?

After Metal Gear Rising was re-announced at the 2011 VGAs, the internet was awash with comment and criticism. Most of this focused on the accusation that ‘Revengeance’ was a terrible name.

It is, of course. It sounds stupid. It’s merely Revenge and Vengeance smashed together with the force and subtlety of a kid crashing his action figures together. It’s crap.

But, and this is a big but, we must remember that this is the videogame industry, and any call for Revengeance being crowned the worst game name ever is shockingly premature.

After all, this is the industry that gave us:

  • Faster Than Speed
  • Violence Fight
  • Dragon’s Dogma
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
  • Horse Punch!
  • Ridge Racer Unbounded
  • PlayStation
  • Minority Report: Everybody Runs
  • Xbox
  • Wii
  • Final Fantasy XIII-2
  • Unreal Tournament
  • Crysis Warhead

Amongst many, many others. Thing is though, love it or hate it Revengeance fits in with the series perfectly. Would you prefer it be called something more sober like ‘Tactical Sword Fighter’?

No, because this is a game where you pick up giant robots and throw them into the sky before leaping on them and slashing them to pieces. Stop taking it so seriously, people. It’s a Metal Gear game, only shifting the focus from one set of insanity to another. Deal with it.
