Mass Effect 3’s Delay Is A Good Thing

Mass Effect 3 has been delayed, causing a lot of voices to cry out in anguish. Then causing them to run to the internet to voice their dissatisfaction, usually with lots of swearing and causing much irritation for normal people like me. But I’d like to throw my hat in the ring and say this:

The Mass Effect 3 delay is not a bad thing. It is a good thing.

Yes, there’s the argument that BioWare gets more time to work on the game and make it as super-special as they possibly can. Naturally that’s great. As the EA statement said:

“Today we have confirmed that Mass Effect 3 will be released in the first three months of 2012. The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone’s expectations.”

It’s marketing guff, but I don’t doubt its truthfulness. But it’s not the main reason the delay is a Good Thing. The main reason is because I will now have time at the end of the year to focus my attention entirely on Uncharted 3 and Skyrim. As will you. And you. And especially you.

Rather than getting a 10-hour romp, a 100+-hour epic and a 40-hour wonder all around the same time and being expected to play them all (otherwise how would I be able to know EVERYTHING ABOUT GAMES?), I – we – can now relax with just two of the most-anticipated future games coming out at a similar point.

Unless they turn out crap. Or unless they too get delayed. Which they hopefully won’t.

That’s as compelling a reason as you’re ever going to get.
