Male, girled-up, well-off, 28-year-old, educated chaps dominate PSN in America

Do you ever wonder who it is you’re playing against when you go online with the PS3? We all know from experience that the 360 is dominated by irritating 12-year-olds who would rather racially insult you than actually play a game, but surely it’s different for the more ‘mature’ console on the market?

Apparently it is, and it would seem that calling the PS3 a mature console is no longer a daft claim. Eric Lempel, US director of operations for PSN, shared some insight into PSN’s userbase with Video Business:

“Right now, it’s primarily male. The average age is 28 years old, in usually the middle- to higher-income range. They over-index against those with graduate degrees. But it’s expanding. What we’re finding ever since we’ve introduced services like the video download service, we’re getting more of the household on the PlayStation Network. Some of the top rentals and sales on the video side have been content that probably doesn’t appeal exactly to that 28-year-old male. It’s more those movies that are geared toward women.”

So there you have it – literally everyone who uses PSN in the US is rich, old and under the thumb. That’s what he’s saying, isn’t he?

Unfortunately we haven’t been able to find out what the average age, income, sex and educational level of the average British or European PSN user is. So instead we’ll just guess: 74, £4,000 a year, transgender and failed.

Do you have any guesses?

Oh, and everyone tells the truth in online survey land don’t they. I’m sure the demographics are pretty similar on both consoles and my personal experience is that there are plenty of idiots to go around on either online service.
