LittleBigPlanet Karting Is A Thing

It was rumoured last night, it was confirmed today.

And by rumoured, we mean ‘announced but no-one could actually quite believe it was a real thing’ because LittleBigPlanet Karting is treading on the toes of ModNation Racers. Which is also published by Sony. Which makes it utter madness for Sony to be publishing a karting game starring cartoony characters with the emphasis being on your creations.

Why would Sony do such a thing? No idea. The announcement itself is sketchy at best, as it was met by disbelief and only the grainy promo image confirms LittleBigPlanet Karting’s existence. Sony didn’t release any media to go alongside the announcement and details are thin on the ground. Move support is rumoured but that’s all it is – a rumour. Besides which, at this point, it would probably be a bigger shock if a karting game published by Sony didn’t feature Move.
LittleBigPlanet Karting will also support 3D, continuing Sony’s big push into that area.
There are now rumours circulating that the ModNation team themselves are behind this. So is Sony dropping ModNation altogether and making LittleBigPlanet home of its kart creation IP? LittleBigPlanet is certainly the bigger game, so perhaps Sony thinks it makes sense to tie the idea into a bigger IP, especially as ModNation never made huge waves at retail.
The timing of the announcement is also a little strange, as it seems to pull the rug under ModNation Racers on Vita, but we are in an era where THQ’s VP promises Saints Row 4 will be even wilder than Saints Row 3 before anyone even had a chance to play it, so who really knows when a good time to announce a new game is anymore?
We’ll just have to wait and see what details Sony throw out way now LittleBigPlanet Karting has been confirmed. It certainly has the potential for wilder creations than ModNation offered, as the ingenuity of the series was with the way players could twist the tools into unpredictable results.
Fingers crossed this lives up to the LittleBigPlanet series and what it has done to date. We’d hate for ModNation Racers to be tossed aside for nothing…

this is not a good idea at all! this is like backstabbing the modnation racers franchise, throwing it in a pit, and building over it, the new franchise, littlebigplanet karting! I am a big fan of the modnation racers franchise, and I am really dissapointed in Sony for doing this!

How is this not a good idea? LBP is a much bigger franchise than ModNation. Sackboy is one of Sony’s big mascots, it would be stupid not to take advantage of it. Given ModNation’s poor sales, this is a good plan. The only stupid thing here is, why on earth they didn’t do it before. Besides, as much as I love ModNation, it doesn’t compare in anyway to LBP’s superiority. Mod’s art style was horrible and the loading times were zomg horrendous. United Front Games, afaik, are indeed making LBP Karting. Hopefully they will learn from their mistakes.
If Sony plays their cards right Sackboy could be the next big mascot, which it really already is to be honest. Although to see Sackboy go down in history alongside the likes of Mario and Sonic is what Sony seem to be aiming for. It’ll take a few gens but hopefully Sony won’t muff it up!
