Konami: ‘We Feared Castlevania Backlash’

Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow is going to be the first title in the series to be released for a high-definition platform, but when Konami first announced it at the Leipzig Games Convention last year there was no Castlevania branding anywhere near the trailer. This wasn’t because Lords Of Shadow wasn’t supposed to be a Castlevania game, but because it was so different from the games before it that Konami feared the wrath of fans.

“It was quite a radical departure from what had gone before with Castlevania, and there was a little bit of nervousness that perhaps it wouldn’t be accepted as a Castlevania game,” Konami producer Dave Cox told GameReactor. Konami wanted to wait it out and see how its announcement went down on its own merits. “As this was quite a big departure from what people knew about Castlevania, senior management took the decision that we were going to announce it as Lords of Shadow, see what the reaction is, and if it’s a good one then this would become a fully-fledged Castlevania,” Cox continued.

There was also the matter of a Wii beat-’em-up Konami was trying to promote at the time. “As you probably remember, we were showing Castlevania Judgment at the time, and it was felt that we didn’t want to take the focus away from that particular game,” Cox summarised. Since Judgement didn’t exactly go down all that well with fans or critics it was probably best to distance Lords Of Shadow from the Castlevania name until the dust had settled.
