Games Industry – Creative Bankruptcy Or Fear Of Bankruptcy?

Reading the UK Charts can be rather depressing. I was just taking a look at the most recent numbers released and although there is still originality represented in LA Noire and Brink sitting at 4 and 5 respectively, the recently released Child Of Eden didn’t even make it into the top 20, currently placed at number 25 in the chart.

It’s for this reason that this year’s E3 comprised of predominately shooters and sequels – the biggest games being titles like Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3, another Tomb Raider and Halo 4. The industry is scared of anything that’s different because it simply doesn’t sell well enough.

I played Child Of Eden on Xbox and it was a brilliant, colourful, spellbinding game. Sure, it had problems, but it was nevertheless an audio-visual experience the likes of which hasn’t been seen before in a videogame – not even in Rez. But it’s been largely ignored by gamers who only want to play the next shooty-bang title. Child Of Eden is concerned not with destruction but with creation – with the ebb and flow of humanity and all that kind of stuff which I’m not going to write here because I’ll sound like a pretentious idiot. Basically it’s good, but because it doesn’t have guns it doesn’t sell.

It’s an unfortunate situation. It feels like the industry is suffering not from creative bankruptcy, but from a fear that anything that slightly veers from the Call Of Duty template simply won’t sell. And looking at the UK Charts, that fear is arguably justified.

Videogames are capable of much more than aim-down-the-iron-sights whack-a-mole gameplay. Developers can create literally anything in a videogame. The only limit is their imagination, and seemingly the need to get money in the company coffers.

So come on PlayStation owners. When Child Of Eden is released in September vote with your wallets and show publishers that there is money to be made in unique and exotic gameplay experieces. It’ll open up the market to new and exciting games, and we won’t be stuck watching Call Of Duty and Halo announcements every E3 from this point on.
