In the Nay-vee, you can play your PSPeee…

The Royal Navy is to distribute 230 PSPs among its weapons engineers as part of an initiative to improve training efficiency. This has nothing to do with learning tactics from SOCOM US Navy SEALs games, although games will be playable on the consoles, and more to do with how sailors, if we’re being blunt, can’t be arsed to read books.

Training videos, featuring slides and voiceovers, will be pre-loaded onto the machines, enabling sailors to refresh their memories of important maths and physics principles in a less boring way then reading a book. Other advantages of the PSP are that it is both cost and space efficient, as well as being relatively difficult to break.

The Navy consoles are all bright blue, they didn’t want pink ones apparently and, as mentioned above, will have fully functioning UMD drives, enabling games to be played. The reasons officers decided not to have the UMD drives disabled were two-fold. First, it was felt that if sailors could play games on their PSPs, then they’d look after them better and the second, funnier we think, reason is that they’re all highly trained engineers and could probably have got the UMD drives working themselves anyway.

If this scheme proves successful, and it’s certainly proving popular with sailors so far, then it’ll be expanded throughout the Royal Navy. Awesome to know Sony is doing its bit to defend out shores.
