Haze Developers Still Love PS3

HazeSpeaking with Develop, Crytek UK (previously Free Radical) claimed that the poor quality of Haze was largely due to “technical issues” with PS3 development, but still backed the console. Crytek UK’s Karl Hilton said that more time was spent trying to get Haze to run on PS3 than actually making it a good game.

“The PS3 is a powerful machine but a difficult one to get the best out of,” Hilton said. “We hit a few stumbling blocks on it that meant we spent more time trying get the game running properly and less time to design the game properly. Don’t get me wrong. For Crytek UK those issues are pretty irrelevant to us now. With what we have with the CryEngine, those problems are gone because the toolset is completely different.”

The big difference is of course Crytek’s technology such as the new CryEngine 3. Hilton explained that he think the CryEngine will finally tap into the PS3’s real potential. “I don’t think we’ve seen the best out of the PS3 at all, and I definitely think one of the best things about Crytek and the CryEngine is that we’re now in the best position to get the most out of the hardware,” he continued. “We know the PS3 can do amazing things, and no one has pushed it as far as it can go, but I think the CryEngine gives us a great head start on it.”

Finally Hilton hinted at creative differences with Haze’s publisher Ubisoft as to the direction of the game. When asked what lessons had been learnt from Haze he said, “we learnt that good relations with publishers are really important, and agreeing on direction is a necessity that developers must overcome sooner rather than later.”

At least it sounds like some of the UK’s most celebrated developers have found a home for their creativity. We’re looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.
