GTA IV tops Japanese charts

GTA may be one of the most important gaming franchises ever in the West, but in Japan it has always struggled to galvanise a similar-sized fan base. So we were pretty surprised when we heard GTA IV stormed to the top of the Japanese charts this week.

GTA IV, which is published by Capcom in Japan, shifted 133,000 units on PS3 and 34,000 on 360 in the week ending November 2nd, according to VGChartz.com. Not only is this a coup for Rockstar, it also suggests that Japanese gamers are evolving a more multicultural taste.

Interestingly LittleBigPlanet, which was expected to fare well in Japan, given its irresistibly kawaii main character, only managed to sell 52,000 copies. Poor Sackboy.
