GT5 Release – Who Do We Believe?

Is Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 5 coming out in 2010 or not? ‘Sources‘ say we shouldn’t expect Gran Turismo 5 to be released before the end of the year. GT5 creator Kazunori Yamauchi on the other hand has said that the discs are being pressed right now. Who should we believe?

Well we like ‘Sources’. It’s where we get most of our best information from. Some people distrust them and that’s understandable. The nature of ‘Sources’ is that you never get to know exactly who they are. Only we know how reliable or close to the action they are. However, for an important story like the potential release date of GT5 we would expect only high-level ‘Sources’ would be tapped.

On the other hand you’ve got the executive producer and driving force behind the Gran Turismo series saying “The discs are being stamped as we speak,” yesterday. That makes GT5 sound imminent doesn’t it? That makes it sound as the development team has downed tools on this gargantuan project, sent the final game code to a factory and started pressing Blu-rays. So surely these two statements are contradictory?

Well, perhaps not. Release dates and ‘gold dates’ are a funny sort of thing. Some games go gold many weeks in advance of release. Pressing several million Blu-rays is obviously going to take some time. There’s also the additional packaging to be considered (cases, Special Edition contents, etc.) that needs to be put together. All that could well have been put on hold while waiting for the game to be finished.

The most important factor though will be Sony. How does it feel about releasing GT5 between now and December 31? Is it too risky? Does it give Sony enough promotion time? Can magazine and TV ads be arranged in time? Can reviews be arranged? (less important these days alas – sad journo face) Can promotional material be sent out to the stores and shelf space negotiated? Will GT5 fans have already spent their pre-Christmas cash on other titles like Call Of Duty or Assassin’s Creed?

I think when you take some of these concerns into account, which are all really about finding the best possible window to get the most from GT5’s deserved reputation and hype, a release before the end of the year looks a little grim. However, I for one will not be giving up hope just yet.

I pre-ordered mine off Play.com and recieved an email saying, Sony have delayed GT5 because they won’t make the November 5th release date. But they are working as hard as they can to release it before christmas. I see it coming out before the end of the year, without doubt.

    We have waited long enough.
