Gamescom Report: Day One

Wow! What a day for the PS3. While Microsoft sat on its hands the day before the show proper, Sony put on a strong press conference with a long list of games to show and got some more love from EA as Mass Effect 2 was finally confirmed for PS3.

Couldn’t have asked for much more than that really.

Anyway, as I say Microsoft didn’t do a lot. Its ‘Play Day’ for the press was largely people collecting lunch boxes and suits playing Kinect games with their kids while us real gamer queued up to play Fable III and Halo: Reach (nothing to get too concerned about ‘Stationites).

EA on the other hand had games to talk about. After talking about The Sims for rather a long time we got to see superb demos of Dead Space 2, Crysis 2 multiplayer, Dragon Age II and Bulletstorm, all of which were mindblowingly impressive. EA has got a great slate of titles coming. Crysis 2 multiplayer alone… wow. In the looks department, it stomps on all the FPS competition and it could even take on COD. I kid not.

Anyway, the real news from EA’s show was that Mass Effect 2 is coming to PS3 next January. That’s about a year after it arrived on Xbox 360 and PC, but since it’s one of the best games ever made we can forgive its lateness much like we would forgive an attractive member of the opposite sex turning up late for a date. Sure you were stood hanging around spending cash just to stand still, but you’ve got one hell of a night ahead of you.

Anyway, I digress. Sony had a few cool things to talk about and show. New PS3 models (ooh). GT5 dated for November 2 in Europe (and UK we assume). A new Ratchet & Clank with 4 player co-op (yeah, OK). And a Resistance 3 teaser that makes it look a little like Left 4 Dead… not necessarily a bad thing.

Did I forget anything? Oh, yeah some guy from Linkin Park played Medal Of Honor live at the Sony conference and sucked… that was cool. There was probably other stuff, but I’m rather tired and I’m going to go to bed now.

And keep an eye on our facebook page for photos

Catch you all tomorrow.
