Five of the most visually impressive games to look forward to

Battlefield 3
It’s weird that Battlefield’s never been a series associated with mind-blowing graphics, but then completely out of the blue DICE surprises us all with one of the best-looking games we’ve ever seen. Could it be more visually impressive than Killzone 3? We haven’t seen enough to come to a definite verdict, but we’re beginning to think that it just might.

Crysis 2
When the original Crysis first came out on PC back in 2007 we never believed we’d see such great graphics on a console. Well, it took three and a half  years and the development of the CryEngine 3, but here we are. Crysis 2’s rendition of New York looks absolutely stunning – we’re not so sure about the alien design though. We don’t remember it looking so…generic.

Uncharted 3
When Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune came out it looked amazing. When Uncharted 2: Among Thieves came out it looked even better. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is set to raise the bar once again, with some of the most detailed-looking environments we’ve ever seen, as well as some truly stunning elemental effects. Why can’t it be November already? We want to play this now.

El Shaddai: Ascension Of The Metatron
Created by Takeyasu Sawaki – character designer on games such as Devil May Cry and Okami – El Shaddai’s artistic roots are obvious. The flowing, dreamlike visuals are some of the most beautiful we’ve seen in a game, looking something akin to an expressionistic painting come to life. Hopefully the gameplay is as graceful as its backdrop.

With John Carmack on your side you know you’re going to end up with a good-looking game. The id Tech 5 engine running Rage is absolutely spectacular, delivering some of the greatest, most varied environments yet seen in a videogame. It’s party thanks to what id calls its ‘Mega Texture’ tech, which allows the artists to create different textures for nearly every object in the gameworld.
