FIFA 12: Indoor Mode Would Make It The Greatest Game Ever

FIFA 12 is going to be good: we all know that. EA’s footy series has become the dominant force in digital – ahem – soccer since 2008 when it smashed Pro Evolution Soccer to pieces.

Things have changed however. PES is rejuvenated this year, playing its slickest game of football in ages and genuinely looking like it might challenge FIFA again.

EA need to strike back. Forget all this noise about ‘impact engines’ and ‘player personalities’. FIFA only needs one thing to topple PES, and that’s the return of the indoor, five-a-side mode.

The mode made its debut in FIFA ’97, but it was Road to World Cup ’98 that really cemented its legacy. In fact, 98’s indoor mode was arguably much better than the full game: by concentrating the game’s mechanics (and skill moves) into a smaller space EA gave us more goals, more spectacle, and simply more fun.

Strangely, for a mode that was so well received and resonates so much with fans, there’s been no sight of a the indoor mode for years. Come on EA: stop worrying about whether John Terry’s ugly mug is rendered perfectly and bring back the indoor mode. You know it makes sense.
