EA closes Pandemic studio

Rumours of Pandemic’s closure were confirmed last night by a leaked internal memo, with around 200 of the company’s staff thought to be losing their jobs and the remainder being relocated to the EA Los Angeles studio, which will now take over responsibility for Pandemic’s brands such as Mercenaries and The Saboteur.

This is sad news, especially given that review code of The Saboteur arrived in our office yesterday and is so far looking like a much more polished effort than the sloppy but fun Mercenaries 2 or the frankly abhorrent Lord Of The Rings: Conquest. It’s hardly a surprise though, given that EA recently announced it would be cutting around 1,500 jobs from its operations around the world. 200 is a lot of redundancies, but it’s only the beginning.

The only silver lining for this story is that a couple of other developers have shown support by pointing out, via Twitter, that the are hiring. Epic Games’ Cliff Bleszinski said, “If Pandemic IS closing then BOO. But fellas, we are hiring!” while Gearbox Software’s Mikey Neumann has this to say, “Well, if anyone from Pandemic would like to work at Gearbox, we’d love to have you! Sorry, about a lousy day :/”
