EA Announces World Cup Game

This shouldn’t come as any great surprise, but EA Sports has announced that yet again it will be launching a special World Cup edition of FIFA with all the teams appearing at this year’s tournament in South Africa. EA releases a new FIFA for pretty much every major international tournament with Euro 2008 being the last spin-off title. The big selling feature of this one is the full online World Cup competition.

“For the first time ever in a videogame compete in a full and authentic online World Cup tournament,” reads a press release. “Carry the hopes and dreams of a nation into battle against fans from rival countries, from the group stage through the knockout rounds to the chance to be crowned 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa champion.”

All you Irish fans may want to pay attention to the next bit. “For fans of nations that failed to qualify for South Africa this is the chance to replay and re-write history. Plus, gameplay innovations capture the journey from qualification to the final tournament with home and away strategies for every nation, situational tactics in-game, and altitude effects that fatigue players faster and even impact the flight of the ball.”

So there you are. Not just the World Cup nations, but plenty from qualifying too, which will hopefully add a little more value to the package. Don’t forget either that Euro 2008 was a real turning point game in the FIFA series. Euro 2008 really set the tone for FIFA games to come and pointed towards the amazing improvements that would follow in FIFA 09, so this World Cup game could well be a clue of changes to come in FIFA 11.
