Do You Want GTA V To Have Multiple Playable Characters?

After Rockstar Games decided to turn the internet upside down by confirming GTA V (and when it would show the first trailer) the rumour mill has been going into a frenzy. It’ll be on next-gen consoles! It’ll come on 8,000 discs on 360! It’ll be set in a fictionalised version of LA! It’ll have gamers playing as multiple characters!

Wait, those last ones actually might come true. They’ve been doing the rounds for a while, but now seem to be gaining a lot of traction.

The question is: do you want to play as multiple characters? Hasn’t GTA always been about taking your poor criminal avatar up from nothing to something, with rocket launchers, drive-bys and helicopter assaults thrown in for the lulz?

Yup, but Rockstar isn’t one to rest on its laurels, and something about a multi-character arc intrigues us. What if this time you’re not just playing as a blue-collar crim but a ruthless mogul as well? Wouldn’t he handle the business side of things before sending out his thugs to do the dirty work?

We’ve seen this countless times in the games themselves of course, from Donald Love sending Claude out into danger in GTA III, Avery Carrington and Tommy Vercetti in Vice City, The United Liberty Paper guy and Niko in IV.

Now we’re not saying this will happen: if we could then we’d be laughing. Red Dead Redemption – MEGA SPOILER WARNING!! – toyed with multi-character by enabling players to take control of Marston’s son Jack, but that was after the supposed ‘main game’ had finished. How difficult would it be to weave in multiple plot threads through a game mainly known for stuff blowing up? And wasn’t it a bit weird to see Niko moaning about killing people in a cut scene and then head out onto the streets and mow down 40 innocent bystanders?

Do you want to see a multi-character GTA V?

If this does turn out to be true I’m sure R* will do something along the lines of the GTA IV DLC with interweaving story lines which allow you to experience the same events from different perspectives, without each character ever totally impacting upon the other. I thought it was done quite well in the DLC, albeit in a limited way, so it will be interesting to see if they can pull off a similar feat over an entire campaign arc.
