Brazilian senator seeks to ban “offensive” games

Valdir Raupp, senator for the PMDB party in the Brazilian state of Rondônia has put forward a bill that, if passed, would make it a crime to produce, import or distribute “offensive” videogames. “Offensive” is a bit vague, so here’s exactly what he means by that: “Videogames that affect the customs, traditions of the people, their worship, creeds, religions and symbols.” Hmmm… still pretty vague. He also describes the above as “discriminatory conduct”, which brings us no closer to an understanding of exactly what he means. Perhaps it’s clearer in the original Portuguese, or perhaps he’s just stirring up a stink using non-specific hyperbole like politicians tend to do.
