Activision Eyes Console Free Gaming

Activision hasn’t seemed all that happy with the console market in the last six months. Its calls for price cuts fell on deaf ears until very recently and now there’s talk of cutting ties with consoles altogether and producing games that don’t require a console to play them.

Speaking to attendees at the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference in San Francisco (why didn’t we go to that?) Activision CEO Bobby Kotick expressed his interest in making games like Guitar Hero work without being tied to a console. “I think what the untethered Guitar Hero does is equal the playing field a little more and give you some leverage with first parties when it comes to downloadable content and the business model,” he said. “Expect many of our products to be playable independent of a console.”

In particular he quite likes the idea of streaming content to HDTVs at 1080p. It seems we’ll be hearing more about all this sometime soon.
