Hearthstone On PS4: Would It Work?

Hearthstone On PS4: Would It Work?

We love Hearthstone here in the office, to a dangerous level. We’ve been playing at least an hour a night, which tends to spiral into two hours, then becoming three, and so on. The digital trading card game (although there is no trading) has blown up in popularity over the last year, thanks in part to being free but mainly because it’s just really fun to play.

Hearthstone recently made the jump from PC and Mac to iPad, with iPhone and Android versions planned for the future. Add in the news about the first “adventure pack” expansion and the future is looking bright for card-slingers. All this leads us to ask – why not bring it to console?

A few years ago, this would have been a less likely prospect. But the Blizzard of today has at least some console experience, porting Diablo 3 over to both current and next-gen systems. If they can do that, a simple card game should be no trouble, right?

One stumbling block could be cross-platform play. At the moment, everyone on Hearthstone plays together, be they on PC, Mac or tablet. This has traditionally been a bit of a pain on console, although games like Final Fantasy 14 sharing servers with their PC counterparts shows a move in the right direction. While separate servers wouldn’t be the end of the world, we imagine Blizzard would be keen to maintain one overall community to encourage a singular metagame.

The game being free to play may also have been an issue in the past, but with the PS4 and Xbox One we are seeing far more F2P games on the stores than before. Micro-transactions, buying card packs or entry to the arena, might be a bit more fiddly with having to go through each console’s payment systems, but it shouldn’t be much of an issue.

The Magic The Gathering: Duels Of The Planeswalkers games have proven that card games can work with a console pad. It’s never going to be as direct as a mouse or touchscreen, but it works nontheless.

So, would Hearthstone work on PS4? Absolutely! Unfortunately, it’s not a priority for Blizzard in the slightest, the team focusing first on the iPhone and Android versions before anything else. A theoretical console version would be well in the future, but there’s no reason not to. After all, it would inevitably make Blizzard even more money, and expose more people to an amazing game in the process. Win-win!
