Dark Souls 2: What gear can I make from boss souls?

Chances are you’re still sitting on a lot of your boss souls because you can’t bear the thought of missing out on some awesome gear. You’ve done the right thing by hanging onto them but depending on your character build, chances are a lot of the boss gear will be useless to you. Here’s what most of the earlier boss souls can be refined into, and also the locations of the two blacksmiths/merchants who can do it for you – spoilers abound, so look away now if you don’t want to know this stuff. DARK SOULS 2: WHO TURNS BOSS SOULS INTO GEAR?

There are two NPCs in Dark Souls 2 who can refine your hard-earned boss souls into top-end gear. Here’s who to seek out and where to find them.

Straid: This batty old sorcerer can be found up in the cells in The Lost Bastille, upstairs from the bridge you cross to reach Sinner’s Rise. Problem is, he’s petrified when you first meet him, so you’ll need a Fragrant Branch Of Yore to free him from his stony slumber. When you do, he’ll be able to turn a lot of the earlier boss souls into a couple of different pieces of special equipment or unique spells, with a bonfire behind him for easy access.

Ornifex: Slightly later in the game, in the Shaded Ruins (past the petrified woman up the hill from Majula and through the foggy area), you’ll need to use yet another Fragrant Branch Of Yore to unpetrify the minotaur thing on the cliff edge over the way from the bonfire. He’ll drop a Fang Key when defeated – drop through the broken floow area nearby and clear out the pesky basilisks, then use the key to release Ornifex from behind the locked door at the end of the passage. Afterwards, she’ll reappear in her home in Lower Brightstone Cove, where she’ll turn Great Souls and later boss souls into the most powerful end-game gear.

DARK SOULS 2: CAN I GET MORE BOSS SOULS?

Sure! All bosses will be back in New Game+, or you can speed the process along if you’re feeling brave. Using a Bonfire Ascetic on the fire nearest the boss will respawn it, allowing you another chance to fell a much tougher version for even more souls and another boss soul. Be incredibly wary about using this technique on later bosses, mind – they really are a lot tougher, plus the entire surrounding area will be reset to its original deadly version with even more powerful foes as well.

DARK SOULS 2: WHAT CAN I MAKE WITH BOSS SOULS?

Straid can convert the following boss souls for 1,500 souls a piece:
MELEE WEAPONS
Mytha, The Baneful Queen Soul: Mytha’s Bent Blade
Requirements: 5 STR, 20 DEX
Dagger. 40 base attack, 67 poison damage. Scales B with DEX. A light, speedy poison dagger – useful for quickly inflicting powerful enemies with poison for decent damage over time.

Soul Of The Pursuer: Pursuer’s Ultra Greatsword
Requirements: 30 STR, 18 DEX
Ultra Greatsword. 156 base attack. Scales B with STR and C with DEX. A huge, powerful sword with insane range.

Flexile Sentry Soul: Warped Sword
Requirements: 15 STR, 25 DEX
Curved Sword. 92 base attack. Scales E with STR and A with DEX. A decent katana for DEX builds that upgrades well.

Flexile Sentry Soul: Arced Sword
Requirements: 26 STR, 16 DEX
Curved Greatsword. 144 base attack. Scales C with STR and B with DEX. A larger, far heavier katana option for more STR-oriented builds.

Soul Of The Last Giant: Giant Stone Axe
Requirements: 45 STR, 8 DEX
Greataxe. 160 base attack. Scales D with STR. A stone slab on a stick – as elegant as it sounds, but what did you expect from the first boss’ soul?

Flexile Sentry Soul: Barbed Club
Requirements: 20 STR, 18 DEX
Hammer. 100 base attack, 67 bleeding damage. Scales C with STR and C with DEX. Upgrades and scales well but otherwise inferior to the Morning Star.

Belfry Gargoyle Soul: Gargoyle Bident
Requirements: 15 STR, 25 DEX
Spear. 100 base attack, scales C with STR. A decent spear for STR builds, but otherwise unremarkable.

Dragonrider Soul: Dragonrider’s Halberd
Requirements: 18 STR, 17 DEX
Halberd. 100 base damage, 90 magic damage. Scales C with STR, C with DEX and C with INT. Triple scaling makes for an extremely versatile, if fairly slow, halberd.

Skeleton Lord’s Soul: Roaring Halberd
Requirements: 16 STR, 12 DEX, 12 INT, 12 FTH
Halberd. 72 base damage, 100 evil damage. Scales B with DEX and C with INT/FTH (whichever is higher). Heavy, but useful on foes with a weakness to evil damage.

Covetous Demon Soul: Bone Scythe
Requirements: 28 STR, 20 DEX
Reaper. 112 base damage. Scales B with STR. An unusual scythe for STR builds.

Executioner’s Chariot Soul: Chariot Lance
Requirements: 30 STR, 18 DEX
Lance. 124 base damage, 67 bleeding damage. Scales B with STR and E with DEX. Another weapon class usually reserved for DEX builds gets a solid STR-based alternative.

Dragonrider Soul: Dragonrider Twinblade
Requirements: 20 STR, 22 DEX
Twinblade. 60 base damage, 80 magic damage. Scales D with STR, C with DEX and C with INT. Heavy, but the flurry of blows and triple scaling makes up for it.

Demon Of Song Soul: Spotted Whip
Requirements: 9 STR, 25 DEX
Whip. 66 base damage, 133 poison damage. Scales B with DEX. Lays on the posion damage thick and fast, but damage is otherwise pathetic when blocked.
BOWS
Dragonrider Soul: Dragonrider Bow
Requirements: 20 STR, 18 DEX
Bow. 72 base damage, 80 magic damage. Scales B with STR, D with DEX and C with INT. One of the best bows in the game for STR builds.

Executioner’s Chariot Soul: Shield Crossbow
Requirements: 19 STR, 10 DEX
Crossbow. 80 base damage. Does not scale. Low damage can be mitigated with a Raw damage augmentation, plus acts as a shield with 70% damage reduction while aiming.

SHIELDS
Soul Of The Pursuer: Pursuer’s Greatshield
Requirements: 38 STR
Greatshield. 100% damage reduction, 50% magic damage reduction. Does not scale. A huge, heavy shield with decent element/ailment defense.

Dragonrider Soul: Dragonrider Greatshield
Requirements: 35 STR
Greatshield. 100% damage reduction, 60% magic damage reduction. Better elemental coverage than Pursuer’s Greatshield plus lighter, but worse versus ailments.

MAGIC
Ruin Sentinel Soul: Heavy Homing Soul Arrow
Requirements: 35 INT
Sorcery. 8 uses. A decent homing attack for all you would-be sorcerers.

Scorpioness Najka Soul: Soul Shower
Requirements: 22 INT
Sorcery. 4 uses. Employs the same multiple shot attack used by the annoying boss herself.

Royal Rat Vanguard Soul: Toxic Mist
Requirements: None
Pyromancy. 3 uses. A poison cloud that works great for inflicting damage over time on tough foes.

Royal Rat Authority Soul: Acid Surge
Requirements: None
Pyromancy. 2 uses. A PvP-centric spell that corrodes fragile equipment almost instantly, considerably weakening opponents.

Ornifex can convert the following boss souls for either 1,500 (lesser souls) to 5,000 (Great Souls) a piece, plus the first one is free:
MELEE WEAPONS
Looking Glass Knight Soul: Thorned Greatsword
Requirements: 20 STR, 15 DEX, 14 FTH
Greatsword. 84 base attack, 50 lightning attack. Scales C with STR, C with DEX and C with FTH. Triple scaling and the boss’s ranged attack in place of the regular heavy attack. Fancy.

Soul Of The Lost Sinner: Lost Sinner’s Sword
Requirements: 24 STR, 18 DEX
Ultra Greatsword. 160 base attack. Scales D with STR and D with DEX. Crazy powerful when upgraded, but attacks also damage the user a little.

Soul Of The Duke’s Dear Freja: Spider Fang
Requirements: 10 STR, 25 DEX
Curved Sword. 84 base attack. Scales E with STR and A with DEX. A middling katana at a glance, but landing a heavy attack with it will slow the victims movement speed.

Soul Of The Duke’s Dear Freja: Spider’s Silk
Requirements: 5 STR, 20 DEX
Thrusting Sword. 72 base damage. Scales S with DEX. Again, looks like a pretty standard rapier, but strong attacks can penetrate shields, making it an amazing duelling weapon.

Soul Of The Rotten: Butcher’s Knife
Requirements: 25 STR, 8 DEX
Axe. 120 base damage. Scales E with STR. Offset the awful scaling with a Raw modification and this huge blade can be viable – each hit absorbs life from the victim.

Guardian Dragon Soul: Drakewing Ultra Greatsword
Requirements: 20 STR, 18 DEX
Ultra Greatsword. 136 base damage. Scales D with STR and B with DEX. Long, powerful and proper fancy. The unique secondary attack is novel, but its usefulness is questionable.

Soul Of Velstadt: Sacred Chime Hammer
Requirements: 40 STR, 12 DEX, 12 INT, 12 FTH
Great Hammer. 152 base damage, 50 evil damage. Scales C with STR and C with INT/FTH (whichever is higher). A solid weapon (no pun intended) and the modified strong attack is beastly.

Old Iron King Soul: Iron King Hammer
Requirements: 50 STR, 8 DEX
Great Hammer. 112 base damage, 50 fire damage. Scales D with STR, D with DEX and C with INT/FTH. A standard elemental bonking stick, only the heavy attack sets everything nearby on fire.

Guardian Dragon Soul: Spitfire Spear
Requirements: 10 STR, 18 DEX
Spear. 64 base damage, 50 fire damage. Scales E with STR, E with DEX and C with INT/FTH. A modest-looking spear with a fiery secret – it doubles as a flamethrower. Neat.

Old Dragonslayer Soul: Dragonslayer Spear
Requirements: 16 STR, 25 DEX, 14 FTH
Spear. 52 base damage, 60 lightning damage. Scales E with STR, B with DEX and C with FTH. Triple scaling and a special secondary attack make this a viable alternative to a regular lightning spear.

SHIELDS
Looking Glass Knight Soul: King’s Mirror
Requirements: 35 STR
Greatshield. 95% damage reduction, 75% magic reduction. Solid elemental defense and also has the ability to deflect spells back at their casters with its secondary attack.
