Canned PS3 Games – Post This Is Vegas Edition

Once every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world, a videogame dies. This tragic state of affairs cannot be avoided. It is part of the natural cycle of gaming life that some games rise and others must fall. The latest of this long line of gaming’s dead would appear to be This Is Vegas and as another title is confined to the dustbin of history we thought we would pay tribute to some of the other titles that have fallen foul of this ruthless industry.

The Dark Knight – A movie spin-off to Christopher Nolan’s second Batman film, The Dark Knight was famously in development by Pandemic Studios’ Brisbane office. It was planned as an open world game, outed by actor Gary Oldman, but it seemingly ran out of money and as Pandemic Brisbane shut its doors all hopes of a release were dashed.

Dirty Harry – Another movie tie-in, only this time based on a classic from the seventies. Dirty Harry was in development by The Collective (makers of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Revenge Of The Sith) starring Clint Eastwood as Callahan. Allegedly staff cuts at the studio meant the project was dropped.

Cipher Complex – This action stealth game was one of the early ‘next-gen’ titles being developed by Edge Of Reality (who later worked on the console versions of Dragon Age). There has been no official word on Cipher Complex, but since the development team has moved on it seems the project is dead.

Harker – Usurped somewhat by the resurrection of Castlevania, Harker would have placed you in an alternate take on Bram Stoker’s character Jonathan Harker as he sets out to destroy the undead and their leader Dracula. Double Helix went on to make Silent Hill Homecoming with no word as to whether it would return to Harker.

Hei$t – This crime action game was being made for Codemasters by inXile Entertainment, but when we spoke to them a few months back the developer revealed it hadn’t even spoken to the publisher in years. That would suggest that this game is pretty much dead and buried. inXile is now working on Hunted: The Demon’s Forge.

Killing Day – One of the better known cancelled games, this Ubisoft title was one of the first announced alongside the PS3 in 2005. It didn’t take long for word to come through that it had been cancelled, but rumours continue that Killing Day may eventually return and make a shocking entry to PS3.

The Lord Of The Rings: The White Council – This was one of the most anticipated LOTR titles in development by EA while it had the license as it was being developed by the team we now know as Visceral Games (of Dead Space and Dante’s Inferno fame). Warner Bros now has the license, so chances are we’ll never see this game.

Are there any more games that you have been disappointed to see canned? Let us know.
