PlayStation 3 Slim – fake or real?

By now you’ve probably read all about these supposedly leaked images from a factory in China that, again, supposedly show images of a new PlayStation 3 model, a model in the Slim & Lite mould.

I’ve been studying them for a good while now and I still can’t make up my mind. Either they are pics of some cheap pirated-PS3 knock-off, or they are real. I wouldn’t be surprised either way.

Thing is, it’s really got the office talking. And it would kind of make sense if it were real. Sony has struggled to get the production costs of the current PS3 model down and its current RRP of £299 just doesn’t compete with the Microsoft’s £140 for the 360 Arcade SKU. So making a slim version of the PS3, stripping down the components and the cost would probably allow Sony to sell it at a sub-£200 price point. And if it came out this Christmas, that would really take the fight to Microsoft. A sub-£200 games console and Blu-ray player? You’re damn right that would sell.

See, now that’s got me convinced. But then I look at the pictures again and I can’t help but think that it doesn’t look like a Sony product. It just looks too plasticky and… cheap. But then the box image looks so convincing and the logo change would be more like the PSP’s…

I just don’t know what to think. How about you?
