Final Fantasy is unlikely to see many changes as our Exclusive interview posted yesterday made clear, but speaking with the European PlayStation Blog FF XIII producer, Yoshinori Kitase, and director, Motomu Toriyama have said that Square Enix will be looking to change the way in which it makes its games in the future so as to avoid the long delays in bringing this game to market.
Square Enix has revealed that after only 24 hours on the shelves in Japan and released exclusively on the PS3, Final Fantasy XIII has already exceeded 1 million sales. The epic RPG sequel has made its mark as the biggest Japanese games release of the year, matching the performance of Modern Warfare 2 in the UK, which also managed to break the million mark in day one sales.
Someone in Japan has posted a live feed of themselves playing Final Fantasy XIII, which obviously may contain spoilers, but is also a novel way of taking a sneaky peak if you just can’t resist.
Square Enix has released a couple of screens featuring the Final Fantasy XIII version of the Adamantoise, an enemy that has appeared in every Final Fantasy game since Final Fantasy II. Normally an Adamantoise is just a big, spiky tortoise but, like, elephant big. This new one is more like block-of-flats big, and has long legs and huge tusks, making more like an elephant or if you will, mammoth, than before. We’re hoping for a PuPu the size ...
Square Enix is making the last adjustments to the European and US versions of Final Fantasy XIII according to the company's president Yoichi Wada. This news comes ahead of a promised announcement this Friday regarding the western release of the highly anticipated Japanese blockbuster. It is widely believed that a western release date will be announced, if not on Friday, then very soon.
It has emerged that now defunct Swedish developer Grin were working on a new Final Fantasy project for Square Enix, codenamed 'Fortress'. The spin-off title was to be an action game more in keeping with Grin's own background and looked to be set in the Final Fantasy XII era. Grin began work on Fortress straight after finishing up Bionic Commando for Capcom, but went bust last month. With the company no more a great deal of concept art for the project is now surfacing giving us a glimpse of what ...
In an interview with Famitsu, Kingdom Hearts producer Tetsuya Nomura has revealed that in the tradition of the series, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (which is about to be released on the PSP in Japan) will feature a “secret movie” after the credits that'll tease the next game in the series. Unfortunately, when pushed for more information Nomura would only comment that, “The next title is the next title.”
After the recent takeover of Marvel by Disney, many are ...
Square’s Vagrant Story, a game described by Play as “one of the most sublime gaming experiences you’re likely to encounter on the PlayStation”, just went up on the Japanese PlayStation Store. Now, we don’t care that we’re still only halfway through Final Fantasy VII – a game we’ve been favouring over many a shiny, new PS3 title – we want Vagrant Story on our Store now. It’s beautiful and deep and the ...
Really small news for really small people. And people of all other sizes too.
It could be. It really could be. And if it is, it’s about time. Square Enix has launched another one of its countdown sites and this one has a big VII in the middle of it and little else. Of course, this might only mean that there are seven days left of the countdown and nothing else, but it’s difficult to imagine that it’s not a deliberate reference to what is by far the most wanted title ...
A tantalising taste of RPG heaven...
There’s always a dense air of excitement surrounding a new Final Fantasy title. The name alone is enough to have the ‘Game of the year’ trumpeteers put on standby, while even the briefest glimpse of a Chocobo has been known to reduce grown men to gibbering messes. But in this instance, such anticipation is fully justified. It’s the first one of a new generation – following in the shadow of series classics FFVII and FFX ...
There was a time when we were quite excited by The Last Remnant. A worldwide-focused RPG with a brave, intriguing combat system and the interesting choice of the Unreal Engine 3, it could've been a dandy new IP from a publisher that relied solely on its cornerstone franchises. Apparently it's hit a few technical snags, though, leaving some gamers disappointed, but performing fairly well at retail and enamouring a few critics.
A PS3 release is still on the horizon, though. I chatted to ...
Final Fantasy, despite 'defecting' to the 360 with its thirteenth instalment, is still one of the jewels in the PlayStation brand's crown. People will inevitably look back on VII, VIII, IX and X as the renaissance period of Square Enix's long-running RPG series (in terms of sales, at least). During the period that these games were released, the JRPG sub-genre was opened up for the world to see – if Final Fantasy VII had never sold 9 million copies worldwide, you can be sure that series like Shin Megami Tensei, Dragon Quest and Eternal Sonata would never have been given a fighting chance on European shores.
Still, even though Final Fantasy X was only released here in 2002, the series has since expanded in a very different direction. No longer is a main instalment this sacred, once-in-a-long-time event. When Final Fantasy X-2 became the first linear sequel in the series, it's as if the leash was taken off; developers within Square Enix started experimenting with different gameplay styles, characters and scenarios.
Despite the camp overtones of this screenshot, I maintain that Crisis Core was my most entertaining gaming experience of the year.
2008 has been a particularly kind year to the PS3, with Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto IV, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, Fallout 3 and (oh, go on then) Resistance 2 all choking up the multiformat charts while garnering solid levels of critical acclaim. The PSP, though, continues to be the diseased hand of the PlayStation brand. While a baffling hit in ...
