Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Sony’s chief financial officer, Nobuyuki Oneda, has revealed that Sony is still making a loss on every PS3 unit sold, albeit less of a loss now than when the console launched in 2006. Sony is currently believed to be losing about 6 cents in every dollar on PS3s (about $18 per unit sold), as opposed to the 13 cents per dollar it was losing initially. We should point ...

It’s not white, it’s not cold and it’s not that big so why, in an interview with Tech On, did Sony Computer Entertainment’s chief technology officer, Masayuki Chatani, compare the PS3 to a refrigerator? Because a refrigerator is convenient, is in your home and provides quick and easy access to delicious content, just like a console with a built in hard drive, and unlike a console that relies on network data storage. Using such ...

Describing its latest ‘get a free PS3 when you buy a very expensive Bravia TV’ offer as an ‘entertainment collision’, Sony has decided to illustrate the idea as literally as possible by making a video of a PS3 slim smashing through a Bravia screen at 80 kilometres per hour. The footage is slowed down considerably and you can even make out the screen rippling in terror before the PS3 has even made contact. In short, watching expensive things getting smashed up is cool, so watch this....

Jack Tretton, SCEA president and CEO, is looking on the bright side of life as he says PS3 sales are 'skyrocketing' and in turn helping out the whole industry. His comments, made recently to Forbes, come after the launch of the PS3 Slim and the worldwide price cuts for all PS3 consoles. Figures shot up in the first week of the Slim being on sale and despite levelling out a little they remain relatively high.

The PS3 Slim is selling well already, but Sony’s ramping up the incentive to buy in time for Christmas, with some very attractive deals for the new 250GB model. From the beginning of October you’ll have a choice of a 250GB Slim with two old but good Platinum games or inFamous, then on 16 October, Uncharted 2 becomes an option, then on 19 October you’ll be able to get a Blu-ray bundle with X-Men Origins: Wolverine (the movie, ...

Sony today released a statement celebrating the fact it has sold one million PS3 Slims since the console's launch three weeks ago. Not a bad effort for a console in third place, we're sure you'll agree. The massive sales probably won't hold, but Sony aims to back it all up with some fantastic releases over the coming months. Including Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which very much deserves to be a system-seller.

The recent 3.0 firmware update was something of a controversial issue. Thousands if not millions of PS3 owners have been venting their frustrations on forums about new features such as 'sparkles' and 'no chime when booting a game' and, worst of all, THE FONT SIZE IS TOO BIG. See what we did there? Anyways, Sony has been listening and has posted this handy FAQ on its blog to address some of these issues. Read on find out the hell it thinks it's doing! I don’t like the “Fizz”. How do I turn ...

Do you own a PS3 Slim yet? Because if sales figures of Sony's new tiny behemoth are anything to go by, you probably do. Actually that's a massive exaggeration, but sales figures for the PS3 have increased by more than 1000 per cent since last week, outselling both the Wii and 360 by a ratio of 3:1. Unfortunately we don't have concrete UK figures right now, but some detective work has been going on all over the net (Gamezine, ...

You may have already been able to pick up a shiny new PS3 Slim from a few retailers lacking a full stock of scruples, but today is the official, proper, bona fide day that Sony's new console hits store shelves. And we're hearing it's selling like particularly well-heated buns, with some retailers imposing limits on how many customers can buy, thus stopping the inevitable rush to eBay that accompanies every single console launch in recent memory. Scouring around it ...

Boo to you Sony Europe for your ads – here's how to do it – US style – with information and laughs. In fact, we seem to remember that someone once said of advertising, 'a good ad is something entertaining with a logo at the end of it.' And here's the proof of that truth: Sony America's PS3 Slim ads....

Sony started its new PlayStation 3 ad campaign last night, just in time for the PS3 Slim's launch in September. There are two ads – one about the games, HD movies and stuff and the other about the online community aspects of the console. Sony is, apparently, plowing £6 Million into marketing the PS3 Slim in the UK alone. In case you missed the ads on last night's telly, here they are....

You may have noticed that Sony hasn't done a great job of hiding announcements recently. Whether it was the PSPgo and Motion Control at E3 or the PS3 Slim at GamesCom, Sony has failed time and time again to keep its cards close to its chest. Proverbial cats were free of bags and worms were barely in cans long enough to notice the difference. However, Sony seems happy enough to laugh at itself if news of its PS3 Slim marketing campaign is anything to go by.

The PS3 Slim isn’t even in shops yet and already there’s a guide to repairing it at www.ifixit.com. Well, a guide to taking it apart anyway. We wouldn’t recommend trying to repair your own PS3, but check out the link anyway for a fascinating, step-by-step look under the PS3 Slim’s hood. Is it Slim because it has a stomach staple? Or does it force itself to throw up after every meal? These are just some ...

Yes, you read that right – you won't have to wait until September to pick up a PS3 Slim as you can march into a shop and purchase one right now. Though only in a few stores, and only (so far, at least) in America. Reports have been flying in from all over the US that the likes of Best Buy and Gamestop have decided to release the Slim early and capitalise on the interest in the new, smaller console. While ...

Those who already own PS3s may feel a bit left out of the Gamescom announcements (as seen on the lovely Nowgamer) if they have no intention/ability to upgrade to the new model Slim. But fear not, for everybody will be included in the festival of newness Sony announced, as the old-fashioned fat console owners are to be presented with a brand spanking new, shiny firmware - version 3.00, no less. While this does come pre-installed on Slim ...
