Tomorrow, November 26, is the Birthday of Killzone's PAL release and it's not just any Birthday. It's been five years since the PS2 shooter was released and while it may have come on leaps and bounds since then there's still a lot of love out there for it, not least from Guerrilla Games. Good news for you is that Guerrilla is sharing the love this weekend with double XP for Killzone 2 online play this coming weekend.
Guerrilla is releasing the latest Killzone 2 DLC later today – the map pack Napalm & Cordite. Like the previous releases you get two new multiplayer maps, however, unlike the previous releases, you also get two weapons that were previously only available in the single-player campaign – namely the boltgun and the Helghast flamethrower. Yep, that's right, the two most powerful weapons in the game. Save for the lightning gun, maybe.
If you've missed the previous DLC packs, you'll also be able to download one big value-for-money pack that contains all ...
News in bits so small you might get them caught in your teeth.

Killzone 2 is confirmed as the best selling next-gen console game of 2009 in the UK so far beating out titles such as Resident Evil 5 and Call Of Duty: World At War on the 360.

I was so impressed with Killzone 2 online that I immediately registered on Killzone.com – choosing an avatar, picking my favourite weapon and map and basically did something that I never, ever do with online games: I got ...

So, we're looking forward to 2009 more than any other year. 2008 was probably the best year for gaming in history but we're not going to bother listing the highlights here as it's really the time to be looking forward, forward to a future of brilliant games.
So here goes – we'll start with the big hitters…

Further to Gav's post yesterday, I'm glad to report that I too have completed Killzone 2. Well, actually, I finished it on Sunday morning at 2am but I've allowed the experience to sink in before I posted my feelings here.
So here goes.
Starts slow but builds brilliantly to a final level that's better than anything I've played in an FPS before.
Superb enemy AI but… not great partner AI. Weird.
Heavy turning/aiming takes a while to get used to but helps make the game feel different than any other shooter.

I just finished writing my review of Killzone 2 for Play and I only wish I could paste the whole thing all over the internet for the world to read because… because… well, I can’t tell you exactly why. I can say that Killzone 2… surprised me. And I can give you a few intriguing, totally out of context quotes from the review…
“Very, very dangerous…”
“We get a special, fuzzy feeling…”
“…just didn’t feel quite right.”
“…we kinda love them for it.”
“So bad…”...

So, I went to Amsterdam last week to visit Guerrilla Games, which was about as loopy as a press trip can get. The highlight was a history lesson on the city's red-light district by the co-founder of the studio – but I digress. The truly important stuff involved the game itself, where we sampled practically all of the single and multiplayer levels. I also watched the game's incredible opening movie which, well… you'll have to read about in Play 174, on sale Christmas Eve 2008! ...
