Now we’re pretty au fait with the
concept of mixing genres but this is
starting to get silly. Gripshift combines
puzzle, racing and platform elements in
one of the quirkiest PSP experiences to
date. Finding itself somewhere
between Super Monkey Ball and Stunt
Car Racer, each stage of Gripshift has a
trio of objectives to clear – a time
challenge, a star collection challenge
and a hidden bonus token to find. And
while the maps start out simple
enough, it isn’t long before you need to
traverse jumps, loops and obscenely
thin tracks just to reach the end.
But perhaps our favourite part of
Gripshift is the way it challenges the
player to think outside the box, not
only once, but often for each task.
Shortcuts and death-defying leaps of
faith often pay off and each of the
three goals means approaching the
level in an entirely different way. Even if
you should tire of the head-scratching
main mode, a completely separate race
mode presents an experience superior
to most dedicated kart games.
A host of enjoyable mini-games add
to the game’s already impressive value
and span everything from penguin
bowling to a Tony Hawk’s-esque arena
full of bonuses to collect. Absolutely
packed with things to do and different
ways to enjoy it, Gripshift is exactly
what a budget game should
be and more.
